I would suggest you meet with at least 3 different potential hires before deciding. Not being thorough with your research can be detrimental later on down the line. Get quotes, references and a portfolio of their past work, just to be sure. You want to find people who not only understand your vision but who can execute it in an open and honest manner. Every person working on this project with you has to be on the same page; so make sure you’re finding the right fit.

3. Failure to attain permits

Permits help protect your home and your safety. Without the necessary approvals to perform work on your property, there’s a chance the renovation won’t meet local building codes. Proceeding without the right permits could result in fines, delays, and may result in having to redo your project. It could even affect your ability to sell your home in the future! 4. Creating an unrealistic budget

In this case, when I say “unrealistic,” I mean a budget that doesn’t allow for much wiggle room. Try budgeting for something between 15 and 20 per cent in overages, but don’t tell anyone! Push your hard number, but know that you have some cushion when things run over.

5. Rushing your project

This is pretty straightforward: In order to get quality results, you have to put in quality work! While you’re in the process of cushioning your budget, go ahead and cushion your time frame too. The unexpected WILL happen, and the unforeseen will occur. Being too strict on a deadline can cause the team to stress, cut corners and perform subpar labour. This is a big investment, so it’s important that it be done right.
